The Great I Am

The name the Great I Am is a name that God uses to describe Himself. In His Word He had both Moses and Isaiah in particular record this name for His people. As simple as the name is, it is actually quite a profound name with endless, and I mean endless, deep meanings. For The Lord to say, “I Am That I Am”, it means He Is!!! He is who He says He is and that means He can undoubtedly do all things, and do it all with perfect excellence! For Him to be The Great I Am means He is the highest, most omnipotent, omniscient, all encompassing, perfect God that the Creator of everything must be and therefore is! 

He can do all things, can serve whatever purpose, can be whoever we need Him to be! He is in every way unstoppable and unmatchable!! When He is for us and with us, in reality nothing can be against us!!! The name The Great I Am means all this and so much more! 

The Great I Am is awe-inspiringly amazing! And out of His beauty and love, He has made us to be beautiful, complex beings. Creatures that can do and be so much! And that should not cause our heads to expand but break us down ever so humbly!! This is because everything that we are able to do and be, as we are graciously made in His image, is a lesser version of all that He is able to do and be… and does and is. It can truthfully be said that anything we can do He can do better! And it goes far, far beyond that. He is the giver and enabler of our very ability to do anything! So it is entirely inherent that He is able to do ALL better than us.

He is perfect and we are immensely imperfect, so we have no reason to do anything but fall down before Him and worship all that He is!! And we need to also be continuously thankful that He provides completely for us and allows us to be and do in His image. It really is nothing short of life’s greatest privilege, being a major part of His grand design and fellowshipping with Him all the way, that is. 

All throughout the gospels, Jesus revealed His identity as the only begotten Son of God the Father, by referring to Himself as The Great I Am.  – I Am The Way, I Am The Truth, I Am The Life, I Am The Bread of Life, I Am The Living Water, and on and on –  He made it clear that is indeed who He is! He has made the way to our eternal relationship with our God. He is the one who we go through with every prayer. He is the one who we lean and rely on for all things. He is The Great I Am! 

And Revelation tells us that at the end of this world every knee will bow and every tongue confess that He, our Great I Am, is Lord! Beloved Ones, we wait and look for that day!
